John Simpson, Chief Editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, announced yesterday that he is to retire.
Mr Simpson will retire in October and on November 1, Michael Proffitt, the current Editorial Project Director, will take over.
Mr Simpson joined the OED staff in 1976.
