SEA Cadets in Abingdon gathered to watch 25 volunteers join a national row-the-world challenge.

Twenty-five staff from the charity set off on their 100-mile trip from Abingdon Marina on Thursday at 7am, and arrived at 3.30pm on Sunday at Lambeth River Fire Station in London, the Sea Cadets headquarters.

They were joined by 180 units across the UK on static rowing machines. The aim for all those taking part was to row a total of 24,900 miles in 80 hours, to raise £250,000 towards the cost of a new sail training ship.

Abingdon Sea Cadet Kieran Todd, 14, a pupil at Larkmead School, said: “I’ve been in the Sea Cadets for about three years and I like going out on the water. Rowing from Abingdon to London was an impressive achievement.”

Judith Hill, 56, from Surrey, a trusts and foundations manager for the Sea Cadets, said: “I have never rowed before so this was a big challenge for me.”
