ABINGDON market place was “buzzing with bikes” at Sunday’s Spring Cycle Fest.

Cyclists of all ages got their bikes security tagged, learnt about cycle safety and went on bike rides up to 40km.

Imogen Taylor, 11, from Abingdon said: “I like going on bike rides with my mum and dad because we go by fields and it’s fun to see what animals are there, and meet people walking their dogs.”

Her neighbour Jade Thorne, 12, said: “The police gave us all stickers to put on our bikes which you can’t take off, so that they can be identified if they get stolen.”

Behind Bars cycle shop on Ock Street took along a selection of good quality bikes for people to test ride, and a professional lorry driver set up his cab to demonstrate just how difficult it is to see cyclists from the driver’s point of view.

Nissange De Silva, 32, from Abingdon, took his son Shenara, three-and-a-half.

Mr De Silva said: “He didn’t ride 27 miles but he did at least five miles just cycling around the market place. We had a fantastic day.”

There were also mountain bike rides on to the ridgeway, Nuneham Courtenay and Sutton Courtenay.

Nigel Northcott of the Freewheeling cycle club said: “We probably had 300 people going on bike rides.

“I turned up at 10.30am, and the square was already buzzing with bikes. There was a tremendous range, from serious cyclists to people just coming to try.”
