Major Geoff Ward from Wheatley was running the London Marathon for the Royal British Legion, and finished in three hours, 30 minutes and 32 seconds.

He said: “I am disappointed with those 32 seconds. I was hoping to finish under three and a half hours.

“But I am very tired, it was a hot day, and I couldn’t have done any more.”

However, he said the support along the way could not have been better.

“Random people were calling out my name just from reading my top, and other people were handing out jelly babies, just for a little burst of sugar.”

At home, his daughters Jocelyn, five, and Annabelle, three, were looking out for their dad on television with their mum Stacey. Mr Ward set himself a fundraising target of £2,000 and said that so far he had banked £1,200.
