A call for a 21st century replacement for Swinford Toll Bridge is wishful thinking.

The 1767 Act expressly precludes another river crossing one mile upstream or downstream.

Thank wily Judge Blackstone who drafted it for the Earl of Abingdon.

Oxfordshire County Council have had at least three opportunities to buy the bridge, repeal the act and extinguish the toll for what now seems like peanuts.

Even if it were possible, erecting another bridge at a time when the county can’t find the money to repair all our potholes and cracking-up roads is unimaginable.
