OXFORD’s working class rebellions will be explored during a special day delving into the city’s industrial past.
The second annual Working Class History Month, organised by the Blackbird Leys Independent Working Class Association, will take place next month, with the main event on May 11.
Working class rebellion and community resistance will be the theme. Leys city councillor Stuart Craft will start the event at 1.30pm, introducing why it is taking place. Top of the agenda for discussion is the Revolution of Otmoor in the early 1830s, which was waged by villagers against the gentry to stop attempts to enclose Otmoor Common in Oxfordshire.
The story of the 1934 Pressed Steel strike will also be told and in the evening Windrush Karate Club sensei Ben Soloman will give a brief talk about the history of martial arts in Blackbird Leys and its effect on his own life.
