OUR picture here was the last time Oxford members of the Old Contemptibles went on parade.

The survivors of the First British Expeditionary Force that crossed to France in 1914 and fought in the battle and retreat from Mons met at Aldershot in 1974, 60 years after Britain declared war on Germany.

The service in the Army Church in the presence of the Queen was the last formal gathering of the veterans, their wives, widows and friends. Age had caught up with them.

Our picture of 12 Oxford members was taken at the Wheatsheaf in High Street before they set off.
