FOUR girls won prizes in the Partridge Essay Competition in 1978.
They were Helen Mills, Cressida Heyes, Justine Hardy and Lydia Craig.]
The competition, started by Frank Partridge, a former town mayor, had been running since 1956.
Pupils at William Morris School did a project on the town and its people in 1982.
Paul Barson, eight, chose to feature one of the town’s policemen.
A team of schoolgirls reached the final of the first Thames Valley Police crime prevention quiz in 1980.
They were Laura Anderson, 13, Victoria Clive, 13, Justine Hardy, 13, Georgina Aldous, 14, and Annabel Wade, 14, all from Tudor Hall School.
