SOME seem to be pleased, but others looked somewhat grim.

This was the day the last Austin Maxi car body was produced at Pressed Steel at Cowley.

The date was June 25, 1981 and according to the sign behind the night-shift workers, 450,213 bodies had been produced in the previous 12 years.

The Maxi was launched in 1969 and was the last car designed by Sir Alec Issigonis.

The Maxi and the Morris Marina were the mainstay of the Cowley plant in the 1970s.

The Marina, later renamed the Ital, was the last car to carry the Morris name.

The picture with our story here, sent in by an unnamed reader, has seven names on the back – Basil Hall, Stan Bennett, Maurice Bye, Ron Skates, Bob MacGibbon, Mike Keys and D MacArthur (production manager).
