YOUNGSTERS got to recreate a mummy and handle ancient Egyptian objects at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum.

Artist Francesca Shakespeare hosted the annual event on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Oxford artist said: “Each year I devise a project which children help with during the Easter holidays.

“This year, I made a core figure of the Egyptian mummy of Maresamum which the children covered in paper mache and decorated.

“It was very popular and I worked with 200 children.”

Amy Griffin, six, of Pangbourne near Reading, said: “I was excited because I had a book from school about the smells in ancient Egypt. I liked holding the little pot because it was shiny and beautiful.”

The life-size mummy will go on display in the museum from May 4 to May 27 as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks.
