IF you’ve ever seen someone cutting the grass at your local park and secretly wished you could have a go on a huge mower, now is your chance.

Oxford City Council is selling off more than 95 of its unwanted vehicles.

An auction is taking place tomorrow (Saturday April 13) at the council’s Marsh Road depot where vans, cars, trailers, tippers and mowers will be up for sale.

Paul Einon, the city council’s fleet and maintenance manager, said: “We are really excited that the vehicle and plant auction is returning on Saturday.

“With over 95 lots including commercial vehicles, recycled bikes, tools and gardening equipment going under the hammer, this is a great opportunity for Oxford residents to come along and grab a bargain.

“We are committed to renewing our maintenance vehicle fleet on a regular basis.

“This is both as part of our ongoing drive to lower carbon emissions, and to offer residents value for money in the services we deliver.

“We are committed to continue increasing the use of electric vehicles where practicable within our pool and fleet.”

Louisa Dean, a spokesman for the city council, added: “Items have been replaced with more efficient, modern equipment because they are life expired or in some cases, no longer used.”

As well as vehicles, the city council will also be selling off some of its old gardening equipment and handheld tools including strimmers and chainsaws.

The city council held an auction last year when it put up more than 50 lots for sale and this netted more than £50,000 for the authority.

Auctioneer Mick Blacow is travelling from Milton Keynes especially for the event.

He said: “These auctions always attract all sorts of people. “You get businesses, commercial dealers and private individuals.

“We expect between 200 and 300 people and there might be a few more than that.”

He couldn’t say how much he thought the auction might raise until he saw all the lots, but said prices could easily “spiral” if two or three people became interested in an item.

“We have had scrap before which has made a fortune,” he said.

The auction will start at 11am but people can view items from 9am.
