THE multi-million pound potboiler that is the Port Meadow student flats saga has taken another twist.

Having approved a flawed scheme which has blighted views over the ancient meadow, the city council placed the ball firmly back into the university’s court by asking if it would mind coughing up £20million to voluntarily lower the height of the new buildings.

Not surprisngly, the university has declined this generous offer and building work continues.

Opponents of the scheme will no doubt fight on.

But the suspicion grows that the city and university intend to do nothing except play out a PR exhibition match in the hope the fuss will soon die down.

We hope they will prove us wrong. And soon.
