THEY make baton twirling look so easy.

But you need good balance, hand to eye co-ordination and posture to become a Strawberry Fayre Majorette. The girls gave lessons to majorette hopefuls at The Barn in Nightingale Avenue, Greater Leys on Saturday.

Oxford’s only majorette display team was founded in 1990 and is opening its doors for new recruits.

The troupe has performed at carnivals and events in Witney, Thame, the White Horse Show in Uffington and Germany.

Jessica Hitchcock, 14, pictured with Megan Collier and Bethany Mayhew, said it was a great way to exercise and meet new friends.

The Oxford Academy pupil said: “Finger twirls are my speciality, but it took a long time and hours of practice to learn how to do it. It’s a great way to spend a few hours and we really hope that more girls will join us.”

Manager Eileen Filer said: “Hopefully, some of the people who came along will come back. It’s very addictive once you start.”

The troupe meets on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9.15pm at The Barn.
