Fireworks filled the sky and now Oxfordshire charities are filling their pockets with £19,000 raised from the biggest public fireworks display in the county.

The Oxford Round Table-run celebration in South Park in Morrell Avenue, Oxford, sponsored by restaurant owner Max Mason, attracted about 15,000 people.

The November 4 event was such a crowd-puller that the display had to be delayed for almost 30 minutes because of the sheer number of people flocking to get into the park.

And organisers have promised next year's display will be bigger and better, with plans for live music as well as other attractions, with more details yet to be announced.

Mr Mason, who runs The Big Bang in Walton Street, Jericho, said: "I was delighted to sponsor the event as it is the biggest display in the county.

"It was a great night but next year will be even better."

The money raised will be shared between several charities.

From the total figure, £5,000 will go towards building a play area for disadvantaged children at the Dovecote Centre in Blackbird Leys, and a further £5,000 will go to Sebastian's Action Trust.

A portion of the kitty will fund a party for Oxfordshire's Blind Club and £1,000 will go to Woodeaton Manor School, Woodeaton, a special school for pupils with emotional and social difficulties.

Assistant headteacher Alex Double thanked the Round Table for the donation, which he said would be used to buy presents for the children and for a Christmas day out.

He said: "We will put some of the money towards their Christmas treat which this year will be a trip to the Think Tank science museum in Birmingham."

The MS Society will be given £1,400 for respite care for carers for people with Multiple Sclerosis, and £1,000 will go to Rosy (Respite nursing for Oxfordshire's Sick Youngsters).

Oxfordshire Playbus is set to receive £1,500 and Clic Sargent will be given a donation of £1,000.
