A WEST Oxfordshire village has installed a milestone to create a lasting celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The milestone was created by Ducklington sculptor Alec Peever and installed in Long Hanborough’s Main Road.
Hanborough Parish Council came up with the idea and long-serving member Peter Hacking, 83, and his wife Helen, 82, agreed to fund it.
As well as celebrating the Diamond Jubilee, the milestone also recognises Dr Hacking’s 12 years service to the council.
Dr Hacking said: “I am very pleased with it. We feel it is a good opportunity to support a local artist in a work of art, because it is a work of art.
“So far it has received general approval.”
The milestone is made from Oxfordshire stone – from Horton near Banbury – and stands about three-feet tall and directs to Witney and Woodstock.
It sits near the village’s original milestone, which was placed after the General Turnpike Act of 1766 made the provision of milestones compulsory.
