Sir, I wholeheartedly agree with Jeremy Mogford's efforts (Report, November 3), to bring back sanity in our beautiful High Street, which is being eroded away with so many buses passing through it and some of the long-distance ones often going far beyond a sensible speed limit.
It appears an excellent exhibition that was held a while back, when the people of Oxford were invited to put forward their constructive ideas on a future for Oxford, many of the contributions dealing with transport problems in the city, has fallen on deaf ears with those bodies dealing with transport in the city.
As Mr Mogford rightly goes on to say, we don't need the long-distance London buses etc coming through the 'High', to the only stop at Queen's Lane, which often only appears to pacify young students, who are quite fit and able to walk to sensibly placed bus-hubs away from the main artery roads in the city.
The exhibition also came up with the ideas from local people, that locals could easily walk to sensibly placed bus stops at either end of the main artery roads, bearing in mind making special arrangements for our disabled and very elderly.
Visitors to our city have often been aghast that our beautiful "jewel" of a High Street has been let turn into the noisy free-for-all that it has become today.
Just stand past the junction of Longwall Street into the High at 6am of a spring/summer morning and look towards the University Church of St Mary the Virgin and realise what could be achieved, an interesting prospect for all to enjoy!
