They have been top of the Conference table almost all season but now Oxford United have made it to the highest point in England.

Mad-keen U's fan Andy Donaldson trekked for eight hours to put up a poster advertising the club's game against Aldershot Town at the top of 878m Scafell Pike in Cumbria.

Oxford United asked fans to put up the posters in a push to get one of the top 10 Conference crowds for today's home match.

They have been turning up in the most unlikely of places - including a bar in Austria.

Scafell Pike is three times higher than the Eiffel Tower, but Mr Donaldson - who has supported the U's for more than 40 years - said it was worth the effort to do his bit.

He said: "I printed the poster off earlier in the week and took it down to the local pub.

"I started chatting to the people in there and thought: 'Where can I take it?' "Then I thought: 'Oxford are flying high in the Conference, let's take them to the peak of England'.

"Unfortunately it was too high for the sheep to see but I did get a few people coming over to have a look."

A second poster has travelled halfway across Europe and was put up at Clumsy's Great English Pub in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

Landlord Russell Bradbury, 23, is flying back to England especially to watch today's game.

He said: "I put it up for a laugh really.

"It was a bit of a silly idea but a few Rapid Vienna fans have asked me to bring them back some Oxford United scarves so we are spreading the word."

Oxford United goalscoring legend Nigel Cassidy posed with a poster in the Molesworth Arms pub in Wadebridge, Cornwall, while one went up at Harrods - in keeping with the top-of-the-range brands on display at the posh department store.

And Frank Webster ensured that details of the match also reached the 22nd floor of the Gherkin building in London.

Closer to home, Oxford United Supporters Club chairman Trevor Lambert delivered 500 leaflets to homes in Greater Leys last week to try to drum up support.

He said: "There's a lot of people on the doorstep within walking distance of the stadium who need a bit of an introduction to the club.

"We see a lot of people going to watch Premiership games - why can't they come to home games at Oxford United?"

United spokesman Chris Williams said thousands of posters had been downloaded from the Oxford United website.

He said: "It has been fantastic. It should help us attract a massive crowd and the target is to make it into the top 10 crowds of all time. Hopefully we should achieve that today."

Manager Jim Smith added: "The fans have been fantastic all season.

"We know that we are probably going to have our highest attendance of the season against Aldershot.

"If we could get a good result, we might keep a few of the fans for other home games which would be great news."

The club has appealed for fans to arrive early for today's match because of the large number of tickets to be collected from the ticket office.
