The Oxford Times has this week become one of the first UK newspapers available on Amazon’s new tablet computer, the Kindle Fire.
Following the successful app for Apple’s iPad and iPhone, readers with the 7in Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD are able to read digital editions of the newspaper early each Thursday through the Amazon Newsstand.
The Oxford Times editor, Simon O’Neill, described the new app as another exciting step in the 150-year-old paper’s future. And to celebrate the launch of the digital edition, we have two Kindle Fires, each worth £129, for readers to win.
Mr O’Neill said: “We are proud of our tradition and reputation as the newspaper of record in Oxfordshire, built up over the past 150 years. While we celebrated our 150th birthday in September and celebrated the part The Oxford Times has played in the lives of so many in our county, we continue to have one eye on the future.
“The media landscape is constantly changing and, while the printed newspaper remains a superb product, people are getting their news from so many different platforms.
“Tablet computers, like the Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPad, are a combination of the reading experience of the traditional newspaper and the interactivity the Internet offers.
“Both our apps, from the iPad and now for the smaller Kindle, mean our readers can literally wake up on Thursday morning and be reading that week’s paper within seconds.
“They can take it with them to read on their commute into work or at any point and anywhere during that week.
“And if they are on holiday, they can still keep up to date with our fantastic news, sport and entertainment coverage.”
The digital edition is produced by PageSuite and offers a digital replica of the printed page. Much like the iPad or iPhone, readers can scroll in close to individual articles or photographs and click through to live weblinks on the page.
Subscription for the Kindle Fire app costs £4.99 a month, with readers offered a free week’s trial edition first.
Newsquest, the parent company of The Oxford Times, is the first regional newspaper group in the country to make titles available on Kindle Fire.
Roger Green, managing director of Newsquest Digital Media, said: “Having seen success with iPhone and iPad newspaper apps, our Kindle Fire apps follow the same publishing workflow to deliver a consistent reader experience on this important new platform.”
The Oxford Times’s app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch remain available through Apple’s App Store. The monthly subscription is also £4.99.
