ONCE again, councillor for highways, Rodney Rose, has made a mistake about the 20mph limit in St Giles.
Having once been a lorry driver, Mr Rose appears in his policies to favour HGVs over and above other modes of transport and does nothing fundamental for pedestrians. It is his responsibility to ensure all pavements are safe.
A large number of complaints about the poor state of Witney’s pavements have been sent to Mr Rose’s department, including several from me published in the Oxford Mail. He has done nothing of any consequence to improve the numerous trip points where protruding slabs or paviors’ edges stand proud of their neighbouring materials by as much as 25mm, so being a certain hazard for the elderly, infirm or poor sighted.
Now I have noticed the pavement between the Market Square and the council’s own Langdale Hall is as bad, or worse, in several places, adjacent to the zebra crossing. So Mr Rose, instead of wasting time and money implementing an unworkable 20mph speed limit in St Giles, take a good look at the walking routes in areas that come under your control. If you cannot guarantee safe passage for pedestrians, you should resign.
