THEATRE 9 to 5: The musical New Theatre, Oxford December 3–8, 7.30pm Box office: 0844 871 3020 Dolly Parton’s new musical just opened in the UK to sparkling reviews and is sure to pack in happy punters here. Based on the hit film, the show tells the story of three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn that there is nothing they cannot do. The show features Dolly’s 9 to 5, with 18 more of her original numbers. The stars are Natalie Casey, who played Donna in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps; Jackie Clune, the West End’s Mrs Wilkinson in Billy Elliot; Bonnie Langford, a memorable Roxy Hart in Chicago; and Amy Lennox, seen recently in the UK tour of Legally Blonde. Boss Franklin Hart is played by Ben Richards, who recently starred in a West End Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

The show features Death of Hi-Fi, Secret Rivals, Skylarkin' Soundsystem, Ran Kan Kan (Cuban Big Band), compere Asher Dust and guests. This eclectic mix features Oxford’s most sought after talent. Acts are giving their services free. Andy Beill, of Secret Rivals, says: “Anyone who’s been to the carnival and enjoyed it needs to get behind the people trying to put it on again, otherwise it won’t happen.” CLASSICAL MUSIC Tamsin Little and the oxford philomusica Sheldonian, Oxford November 29, 8pm Box office: 01865 980980 Tamsin Little, one of the most celebrated violinists of her generation, joins the Oxford Philomusica under its conductor Marios Papadopoulos, to perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor followed by the orchestra’s performance of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a symphonic suite based on The Arabian Nights custom-made for Philomusica’s virtuoso players. Ugly sisters, handsome princes and glass slippers feature in this rags-to-romance among the sunlit canals and carnivals of Venice. The team who conjured up Dick Whittington, Beauty and the Beast and Ali Baba are back. This Cinderella is written by Ben Crocker, directed by John Terry with music by Paul Kissaun, design by Russell Craig, choreography by Tim Claydon, costumes by Nell Knudsen, and lighting by Amy Southeard.
