WITH reference to your article about Usman Baker, the boy who suffers with the rare condition PKU, (October 26), I read with interest as my son also has the same condition.
My son was five days old when he was diagnosed but, with the great care of a wonderful doctor and dietitians, we managed to cope with the diet.
It was hard work for many years. We did have holidays, taking all of the diet stuff with us.
I would just like to let this little boy and his family know it does get easier, although it may not seem it.
My son is now 33 and he’s still on a low protein diet. It is a little relaxed now but he still does not eat meat, fish, cheese or eggs.
His diet consists of plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit and salad.
I would also like to say that my son coped very well on his diet.
Best wishes and lots of luck to you and your family.
