Oxford United's loyal fans look set to take the club into the record books tomorrow - earning them a place in the top 10 Conference attendances.

More than 7,193 supporters will need to pass through the stadium turnstiles for the game against Aldershot Town to get the place in history.

And according to club secretary Mick Brown, it's looking promising. He said: "We've been extremely busy, and it's looking highly likely that we will now make it into the top 10.

"In fact, looking at the current trend, it would take a big drop-off in sales not to make it, so we are fairly confident - and that's all thanks to the fans.

"It's not just tickets for the league match on sale, it's the Wycombe FA Cup clash too, so we're twice as busy. But it's a nice headache to have."

Yesterday, the club's ticket office was a hive of activity, with staff struggling to keep up with demand. Phones were ringing incessantly and box office staff saw a constant flow of fans come to buy tickets.

Dave Williams, of Cutteslowe, a United fan of 40 years, was one of many people queueing for tickets yesterday lunchtime.

He said: "My 14-year-old daughter Sian texted me earlier today from school asking me to come down to make sure we got tickets.

"She's been following United home and away this season and is desperate to be part of the record-breaking crowd tomorrow. It's great to see United buzzing like this."

Also in the queue was Julie Fisher, of Bicester, who was equally eager to snap up tickets.

She said: "I'm a huge United fan, but haven't been able to make it to a match yet this season, so I'm very excited to be able to get to this one.

"It must make a difference to the team, knowing so many people are behind them like this."

Mr Brown said: "The support really helps the team. Having a large crowd at home matches and large numbers following us when we travel makes all the difference."

The club launched a poster campaign about 10 days ago in its bid to break into the top 10 Conference attendances. Mascot Olly the Ox joined club staff canvassing at offices across the city.

The biggest United contingents so far this season have been at the Grays Athletic match (6,316 United fans), the York City game (6,134) and the St Albans clash (5,976).

Mr Brown added: "Oxford fans have been persuading friends and colleagues to come along to games.

"It's all down to the fans as to how far we make it into the top 10. We would need to beat 7,230 to make it into 9th place."

The club box office will remain open until 7pm tonight for cheaper advanced tickets.

* Tickets for the Wycombe FA Cup tie a week on Saturday went on sale yesterday to season-ticket holders. United have been allocated 1,850 tickets and six wheelchair places.

Any unsold tickets will go on sale to supporters with a ticket stub from tomorrow's game.
