A NEW Oxford ladies’ skating team were left spinning after losing their first match.
Roller Derby – a full contact sport – sees women on skates scoring points by breaking through the opposite team.
But new team Oxford Wheels of Gory said they were “proud” after their first game. Their debut match was held at the sports hall in Heyford Park, Upper Heyford, on Sunday.
But the team were beaten by The Reaper Roller Girls from Swansea by 49 points to 257.
Liz Ellis, 35, from Bicester, said: “It’s been likened to rugby on roller skates. It is a full contact sport but we do wear heavy amounts of padding.
“Essentially, it’s just really good fun. The competitive side is an added bonus.”
Ms Ellis, whose game name is Scanda Liza, said the team had done well as they were so new to the sport.
The ladies team trains on Sundays from 5 to 7pm and Wednesday from 8 to 10pm at Upper Heyford Sports Centre.
