I MUST comment on your article about taxis making alleged illegal turns at the Carfax intersection (October 27).

I have driven taxis in Oxford since 1970 and been involved with the licensed Hackney Carriage business for the best part of 35 years. Not once in that time has anyone raised this matter and I personally must have made literally hundreds, probably thousands of turns at this point.

The public have been encouraged to stand at Carfax corner waiting for cabs and when Cornmarket was fully closed, the only route was to turn and head back down The High. You should be aware that real problems arise if taxis drive past customers and indeed, once stopped, a taxi may not refuse a fare within the city boundary.

I am not aware of any accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists at this point and I am also not aware since my 35-year driving service that the law has been changed at this point. If it has, I would have expected the traffic police to take appropriate action – I cannot see that this has anything to do with Oxford City Council or their employees. They should be concentrating on vehicle standards, which is the raison d’être of the licensing system.
