ABOUT 25,000 people came out on a cold November evening to enjoy Oxfordshire’s biggest Bonfire Night display on Saturday. South Park was packed with visitors watching Oxford Round Table’s 45th annual display, which kicked off at around 7pm, with £12,000 worth of fireworks.
Organisers are hopeful they will beat last year’s fundraising total for local charities of £90,000.
Jason Priest, 41, spokesman for Oxford Round Table said: “We are over the moon – the weather was perfect and that meant the event flowed perfectly. I think the event gets bigger and more professional every year and it is always about developing it to make it better for the crowds.”
The display was provided by Kimbolton Fireworks, a firm that also worked on the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Culham Park fireworks display near Abingdon was one of the other largest displays, while more than 5,000 people attended the Bicester Round Table Fireworks Spectacular at Pingle Field on Saturday night.
Spokesman Matt Fincham said: “It was very successful. The rain held off and we put on a good show for the people of Bicester.”
In Didcot, a fireworks display was held at Loyd Recreation Park in Brasenose Road on Saturday night, organised by Didcot Rotary Club.
It was estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 people attended.
And on Friday night, about 150 people attended the 22nd Oxford Sea Scouts Headquarters in Meadow Lane, off Donnington Bridge Road for a fundraising fireworks display.
Still to come tonight are Kidlington Parish Council’s fireworks display, at Stratfield Brake Recreation Ground, a Bonfire night celebration at The Plough, Upper Wolvercote, from 6pm, Fringford fireworks display, at the Village Hall, Fringford Green from 5.30pm and St Michael’s School fireworks, at Marston Road, Oxford from 5.30pm.
