A CRASH between two lorries on the Swinford toll bridge caused long delays yesterday.

The privately-owned bridge south-east of Eynsham was shut for nearly an hour after two lorries became jammed together during the morning rush- hour, right.

The lorries got wedged on the bridge as they tried to pass each other while going in opposite directions.

The incident caused long tailbacks in both directions as the bridge was blocked.

Many motorists abandoned their cars after the crash happened at about 8.30am.

Police officers closed the B4044 at Farmoor at about 8.40am as work began to free the lorries.

After the two lorries were freed and moved, the 18th century bridge was reopened to traffic at about 9.20am.

Thames Valley Police said that no one was injured in the incident.

The accident was the second to close the bridge to rush-hour traffic in recent weeks.

Commuters heading home from Oxford on Wednesday, October 24, suffered long delays after a crash blocked the B4044 near the bridge.

Three cars and a lorry were involved in the accident.

Police were called to the scene just before 4pm. The road was closed for more than two hours while the damaged vehicles were removed.

Swinford bridge is one of only two toll bridges across the River Thames upstream of London.
