IN A continued effort to go green, People’s Supermarket manager Chris Waites has been busy changing light bulbs at the store in Cowley Road.

Mr Waites has converted all the shop lighting to LED bulbs.

Twenty-five 6ft long overhead lights have now been replaced by LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs.

According to Mr Waites, 25, from Long Wittenham, the energy-efficient bulbs run on 30 watts of power compared to the 90 watts of power the old bulbs used.

He said: “It has cost us about £600 to replace the bulbs but with the energy savings we make, we will recoup the money within a year.

“The LED lighting is similar to daylight so it is more pleasant to shop under and means we can now offer work experience to those people with epilepsy who are sensitive to the flicker of conventional fluorescent bulbs.

“Our shop vehicle is also powered by vegetable oil.”

The People’s Supermarket opened in Oxford in July and, as a not-for-profit organisation provides money to local groups.

In September, staff had a setback when thieves climbed over a wall and stole a safe containing £2,500.
