Sir – It was interesting to hear from Trevor Stevens, of Marston, (Letters, October 18). I share his scepticism about providing cycle tracks alongside roads; even quite good ones are often of little benefit.
However, there seems to be some confusion; there is little prospect of similar tracks being installed elsewhere and we certainly haven’t been calling for them. Instead, it is cycle lanes painted on the road that are proposed and these are far more likely to be used. So, Cyclox is calling for gaps in the painted cycle lanes to be filled.
The city council is consulting on filling small gaps at junctions and we would hope that progress on that can be made soon. We’re hopeful that the 300m gap on Iffley Road, which should have been painted in May, will also be done soon.
On Marston Road, there’s a need for a cycle lane from London Place to Edgeway Road and another from Harberton Mead to John Garne Way, marked around the parking. The county council have drawn up a scheme on these lines, which is apparently in the queue for funding. If our councils can get a bit slicker at delivering these schemes, there could be quite a substantial improvement, quite rapidly.
