Sir – As an inveterate bellringer myself I found it gratifying that a non-ringer commented so accurately on the art of bell-ringing (An issue that will chime with many of our readers, Quad Talk, October 25).
All too often we encounter uninformed gobbledegook about bellringing in the press and endure the degrading caricature of overweight monks swinging around precariously on long ropes as if in spontaneous bungee jumps.
I am pleased, too, you attempted quite successfully to explain what a peal is and relate it to its mathematical intricacies. Perhaps, you might consider taking up the hobby. It can be rewarding on many fronts.
