Sir – What a splendid idea, M. Palmer’s letter (October 18), of non-noise, non-polluting, trams feeding the Oxford city transport problem, rather than what we endure at the moment, but please no, not in our beautiful ‘High’ (High Street) — just stand at the junction of High Street and Longwall Street early morning and look onwards into the High Street, before the bus melee starts up and you’ll see what Nikolaus Pevsner described as ‘The Greatest Street in Europe’ with its beautiful architectural sweeping curve and then not ruined by modern vehicles today.
Trams coming from the eastern direction should turn into Longwall Street and drop off in that street, it’s wide enough.
Then we can get back to the idea of a piazza-style High Street, where the many cafes etc could spill out with their tables and chairs to make this a beautiful walking area that it deserves. West of the High Street, trams can terminate in St Aldates.
The only exception to this, that the traders get their goods delivered to them in the High Street early on in the day, then at least we can have the rest of the day to enjoy the ‘High’, pedestrianised for all to enjoy.
