Sir – We were delighted to read mention of our partnership with Hinksey Sculling School (Bringing rowing to a different audience, October 11).
We are lucky enough to own extensive rowing facilities in a prime location and have shared these facilities with neighbouring schools and clubs for a number of years. We were, however, saddened to see this positive partnership dismissed as no more than a sop to the Charities Commission. We are not an institution looking to tick a box; we are an organisation profoundly conscious of the world beyond our perimeter, willing to go the extra mile to make a difference.
Independent schools must pay heed to the directives of the Charities Commission but do not let that obligation obscure a sincere desire to engage positively with our local communities.
