THERE is something fitting in the move to open up a free school at the former Lord Nuffield Club site in Temple Cowley.
The financial implosion of the club, which was founded in 1910, so soon after it opened its new building has been well-rehearsed and, setting aside the controversy surrounding that, its demise was a sad day in the history of the city.
Since then the site has sat empty.
Now, finally, comes confirmation that Cantay Estates has purchased the building and sports grounds for £1.5m and plans to use the building for the Tyndale Community School.
It may also see housing on the site, and we have to be realistic that a school of this nature in this building has to be funded some way.
There is a debate around free schools themselves as a concept, but finally seeing a good community use for a building originally built as a social hub would no doubt find favour with Lord Nuffield as he looks down from the big car factory in the sky.
