IS THERE a hidden agenda in the mind of Oxford City Council regarding the proposed huge increase in the business rates for the properties in the historic Covered Market?
Sixty years ago, the majority of the premises were occupied by butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, grocers, florists, a jeweller, a pet shop and two restaurants. In later years, all that changed to what we have today. I suppose that’s called progress and what the public wants.
Now it appears that, due to the proposed increase, this is about to change, with the present occupiers moving out.
Of course the city council, being responsible for the market, must be seen to be making a profit for ratepayers but by driving out the occupiers and making it expensive for new owners to move in, the market would be no more.
What, then, would our esteemed council do to make up the lost revenue? Either sell or rent the space for building on. This, as a prime city centre site, would be ideal for more student accommodation for either Oxford or Brookes universities.
I appreciate that Oxford is known throughout the world for its university but the residents elect and pay the rates for the city.
I would suggest that the majority of us are amazed how many properties are being built or taken over for student accommodation.
Oxford City Council should remember that ‘the historic Oxford Covered Market’ is known around the world and is worth keeping.
