I’m greatly saddened by Sir John’s passing. He was one of the most brilliant and wide-ranging historians of the past century and his work was a key inspiration for me and many others of my generation of historians of Spain and the Hispanic world. He was immensely generous in sharing his knowledge, advice, and hospitality with others, and a magnificent exemplar of scholarly collegiality and probity. My thoughts and prayers are with Oonah in this difficult moment.
