SHELDON Martin Frederick Rochester ARCM LRAM 1.5.1921 15.4.2021 Loving husband of the late Olive Sheldon and father to Julia and Clare. Dearly loved by grandchildren Paul, Amy, Lawrence, Edward and Louise and great-grandchildren Emily, Freddie, Maia and Leila. He will be greatly missed by his family and remembered for his work with music education in Oxfordshire. Donations in his memory may be made to Friends of The Young Musicians Association.

I was so saddened to hear of Martin’s death, just a few days short of his hundredth birthday. As a ‘career musician’, I am eternally grateful to him for all that he did to build the Oxfordshire County Music Service, and my teenage years coincided with his stewardship of the organisation so I got to know him really well. In 2017 I had the huge pleasure of seeing him collect the music service’s ‘Lifetime Achievment Award’ for which I had nominated him. No one deserved it more. My thoughts are with his family at this time. (I text this between teaching appointments at two Oxfordshire schools. I know he would approve!)

I still remember the day in 1981 when Mr Sheldon came to my school to audition me for the County Youth Orchestra. He had a huge impact on so many young musicians. My thoughts are with you all.
