HOLMES Ronald It is with sadness that I announce the death of Ron Holmes at the age of 92. He spent his early life in Windsor, Hastings and then Bexhill brought up by his mother, widowed when he was only 13 days old, in a society with no Welfare State. In the army he joined the parachute regiment and served in Palestine. He married Beryl, a fellow motorcycle enthusiast in 1954. He started work at Pressed Steel Fisher's Cowley factory in the 50's and move with his wife and son from Bexhill to Berinsfield in 1960. With intermittent lay-offs he worked there until his retirement. During one lay-off he worked in labs at Harwell for a few weeks. He had many roles at the car plant, in the early years as a line labourer much of the time in the spray booths of Q building, mainly on nightshift. His final role was as a process engineer, a task he much loved as it frequently required problem solving skills to keep the line operating. As he neared retirement he and Beryl joined the PSF Bowls club remaining members until her death in '99. He moved to Frome in 2002. He enjoyed travel with destinations including: The Antarctic, New Zealand, South Africa, Tristan da Cuhna, St Helena, and The Arctic. He also had experiences in hot air ballooning, flying in a microlite and most importantly did two parachute jumps when he was 82 (to his regret tandem). Failing health prompted him to go into care choosing a home local to his son near Reading. David Holmes [son].
