EPIC beats, sizzling DJ sets and raucous revellers not only thawed but managed to fully roast a sell-out New Year’s Eve crowd at Get Loaded in the Dark.
With its monster line-up, the size of which was only matched by the length of the queues for the cloakroom on a freezing cold night, the O2 Academy in Brixton, London, was alive with bouncing happy revellers and vibrant beats as it welcomed in a noisy 2010.
The stunning Chase and Status set about the main room in a dizzying combination merging all their dirty D&B classics into their latest and greatest dubstep ditties.
The dance due were seamlessly followed by an excellent Sub Focus while Kissy Sell Out transformed an empty chilly foyer into a beating heart of the venue drawing a bigger crowd than it could hold.
Union DJs provided a suprisingly entertaining set but some of the best dance tunes were hidden away in the venue’s Crooked room, which in fact was nothing more than a corridor at the top of a set of stairs. But no one seemed to mind as long as the tunes were flowing.
And of course new year was marked with the giant on-screen 2010 countdown and inevitable fireworks display which thrilled the who revellers packed the main room.
Perhaps the highlight of Brixton’s Get Loaded, apart from the discovery of the intimate Crooked room, was Chase and Status’ mix of Nneka’s Heartbeat which nearly lifted the roof of the iconic venue.
Because the final free London Underground train ran at 4.30am I unfortunately missed Simian Mobile Disco, which would have undoubtedly have been a highlight if the electro duo had not been put down so late on the lengthy bill, which included 39 acts across four rooms.
Last summer 20,000 filled Clapham Common for the inaugural Get Loaded in the Park featuring Orbital and Royksop and this New Year’s Eve event at Brixton Academy was sell out weeks in advance.
Understanding the clamour by fans for, not just the music but also the non-pretentious and positively friendly atmosphere, Get Loaded will be back a third time at a secret location yet to be revealed on April 1.
Maybe, just maybe, we have a new regular unmissable event in the clubbing calendar.
