Six months ago, I finally got to see The Jam 25 years after they split up, in their new guise as From The Jam.

The gig, at the Zodiac in Cowley Road, was an absolute cracker, so I was gob-smacked when I found out the band was returning six months later to the recently refurbished venue, now called the Carling Academy.

Paul Weller, who walked away from The Jam in 1982, has been replaced in the line-up by singer Russell Hastings, but bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler are still there to ensure authentic renditions of old favourites.

I suspected that From The Jam might not deliver such a barn-storming concert second time around, but I was totally wrong.

They were tighter as a musical unit and seemed delighted to have the opportunity to deliver a 25-song set of the group's greatest hits and album tracks.

Early on in the set, Hastings appeared to launch into It's Too Bad in the wrong key, but he quickly recovered and after that there was no looking back.

Highlights were some of the lesser-known tracks, Pretty Green, A Bomb in Wardour Street and Girl On The Phone, with Strange Town, That's Entertainment, Going Underground and Down In The Tube Station at Midnight the best of the big hitters.

"It seems like only yesterday since we were last here," joked Hastings.

But don't leave it too long until next time, lads.
