Call me a heretic, but I've never quite seen why this burger bar (Peppers Burger Bar, Walton Street, Oxford) is rated so highly, although undeniably it has an awesome cult following.

When Peter Triggs closed the takeaway last year and moved to Canada, ex-pats were soon tapping away on the Internet about how life would never be the same again.

The place has since been reopened by Ali Ashraf, who part-owns nearby Indian restaurant The Bombay, and it's smarter than it used to be (that might lose it brownie points among the sort of nostalgics who like to hang around the likes of the Excelsior in Cowley Road for its 'character').

One of the main selling points is that the burgers are cooked to taste - yep, there are punters who ask for stuff so rare a good vet could get the beef back on its feet.

However, a dash of the various sauces available doesn't go amiss, as the condiments are second to none. And even the veggie fayre is quite sumptuous.

Peppers is open from noon-2pm, and 4.30-11pm, Mondays to Thursdays; noon to 2pm, and 4.30-midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; 4.30pm-11.30pm Sundays.
