A Sexy Brazilian is what they were offering. I’m not sure why – but that’s what it was... and that’s what I had.
That may have caught your attention, as it grabbed mine, but if you’re expecting salacious exploits, you are going to be sadly disappointed. Fortunately, the same can’t be said for the aforementioned Latina treat – which, while perhaps not living quite up to it’s pulse-racing description (they rarely do), provided a very satisfying few moments of finger-licking enjoyment on a Sunday afternoon.
After all, it’s hard to beat a good panini after a day in town – and this one, while hardly reminiscent of Rio or Salvador, was a fine specimen - with juicy chunks of marinated chicken, crispy bacon and molten Mozzarela (lascivious Italian might have been a better name?).
The paninis, baguettes and bagels are the best reason for popping into this welcome new addition to Oxford’s cafe society. But that’s not all. While I dug into my panini (£4.50), served with coleslaw and a little salad (and free use of the olive oil and balsamic vinegar), my young son – who has developed a worrying addiction for cream teas (it could be worse!), tucked into a scone, with jam and clotted cream, along with a pot of good English breakfast tea (£3.75). I know it was good, because I had most of it. He wouldn’t let me anywhere near that scone though. Clever lad.
We also had an orange juice – though this was the standard stuff that is sold in bottles(£2.10) from the fridge, so no points there.
A relaxing spot, there are newspapers to read, and two floors of seating, so plenty of room to chill, read or, judging by our fellow diners, get out your laptop.
The other big plus the Art Cafe has in its favour is hinted at in its name. The walls are studded with great original paintings, all for sale. And most are very good indeed, with a few postcards also on offer for those who don’t want to fork out.
It’s actually a better art gallery than some of our real galleries. That Sexy Brazilian could certainly win a Turner Prize – though, given its name, maybe also a complaint under the Trade Descriptions Act.
Ah well, you can’t have everything...
