Starting Up with Jon Ellse @ The Perch, Binsey
A quick update… We closed our doors on Sunday, January 4, and refurbishment building works began on Monday.
We hope to reopen sometime in April but much will depend on the weather over the next few months.
The majority of the refurburbishment work will focus on our ‘back of house’ areas to include brand new kitchens, loos and a new beer cellar.
We’re all looking forward to the new kitchens as it’s been incredibly frustrating having to put up with the existing layout and the ‘well-used’ equipment that we inherited. Our chefs are very happy!
Work on the new menu is under way. We promise not to get all fancy on you but we’re definitely going to work at delivering a fantastic proper pub menu that has a garden-fresh, seasonal ‘farmhouse’ focus – home-baked breads, casseroles, game, sharing plates, summer salads and hedgerow desserts to name a few.
Sundays, of course, will feature roasts using fantastic meats from nearby farms.
The main change to our front of house will be re-siting the new, larger bar to the centre of The Perch where it was originally some years ago.
This will come as a huge relief to those that have waited far too long for a beer on a hot summer day.
We’ll be taking full advantage of being a Freehouse and will have guest ales, ciders and craft beers that change weekly.
We’re overhauling our wine card to feature a good range of English wines to complement a short, balanced, more familiar wine list.
Come the summer we’ll have our Shed Bar open and Jimmy will be manning the grill serving up fabulous burgers to enjoy with a beer (or glass of Pimm’s or summer cocktail) in the garden.
When we reopen many may not notice the changes we put in place and that’s absolutely fine with us.
The Perch is a beautiful pub in a gorgeous location and we really don’t want to change it.
We want to make it that little bit better and more efficient but not change its character or its personality.
In short we want to get The Perch back to what it should be… a superb Oxford riverside public house with an inclusive, relaxed atmosphere serving great food, beers and wine. And we’ll back all that up with a totally brilliant kitchen and bar team to look after you.
Thank you all very much for your support in our first year in Binsey Village. We have enjoyed it immensely and we look forward to many more years to come.
