Tim Hughes enjoys a wood-fired pizza at his favourite East Oxford bar

Tucked away between the O2 Academy and The Bullingdon, The Library occupies a fond place in the heart of music-lovers. With its real ales, friendly staff, heated garden and regular live music and DJ sets the bar is one of the coolest hangouts in Cowley Road.

But there is another reason to check out this OX4 bolthole – pizza.

Every Tuesday foodies descend on the bar to feast on the kind of pizza that would even cheer a homesick Neapolitan. And if you don’t fancy joining the crowd in the yard, you can take away.

Called Fundi (the name is Swahili not Italian, and means ‘expert’ though the African connection is unclear), the wood-burning oven is run by expert pizza-maker Steve Law, a happy-go-lucky Scot, who pummels dough, sprinkles toppings and shovels his stone-baked creations into his handmade oven with speed and dexterity. He also possesses a prodigious memory for orders and toppings, having no need for anything as amateur as a notepad.

The menu is uncluttered, offering no more than four choices and a changing special, costing around a fiver each (cheaper for the Margarita). I was delighted to find a Napoli with anchovies – the salty crown prince of pizzas. Steve was also happy to substitute items – switching capers for chilli. My friend meanwhile loves capers and, bizarrely detests anchovies; again, Steve was happy to substitute – throwing on a handful of mushrooms instead.

They were both great.

The base is thin and the edges ridiculously crispy, while the centre is yielding without being soft or soggy.

The tomato puree is good quality and tangy and heat lovers can have their order doused in Steve’s own blend of chilli oil (made from extra virgin olive oil, he told me proudly). For a cheap and tasty takeaway it is unbeatable. But it is even more fun to eat in the yard – watching Steve flitting gracefully around the oven. And if you order a pair, you can dine in with a bottle of wine for just £16. Now there’s value. No wonder Tuesdays are being talked of as the new Fridays.

As well as pizzas, Steve also offers dining experiences themed on individual cuisines – either in your own home or his. Email stevesglobalvillage@gmail.com
