The world has changed a lot since the first Oxfordshire Scout and Guide Gang Show took to the stage more than 60 years ago.
But luckily for theatre-goers, the sparkle and talent remains just the same as it did in 1950.
This year’s run, which features more than 300 Scouts and Guides, started with a bang at the New Theatre on Tuesday night.
It opened with a colourful Take That medley, and although some of the youngsters were obviously nervous to start, they soon got into the rhythm.
It can’t be easy stepping out in front of a packed theatre and they soon made it look like they’d spent their whole lives in the spotlight.
Ensuing scenes featured an Elizabethan ship, a school trip to London and then deep into a forest.
I was stunned at the amount of work the costumes must have taken. There were also references to the impending Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with songs from her 60 years on the throne.
My favourite performer of the evening was the very young captain of the ship, who got a special “awww” from the audience when he appeared.
Two budding comedians on stage – the teacher in the school trip sketch and a young man in his pyjamas who claimed he didn’t watch television – were also particularly impressive.
A future in theatre awaits, I think! The relaxed atmosphere was also lovely.
Although the world may have changed since the 50s, the Gang Show remains a staple in the Oxford calendar and after this performance, I’m very glad it has.
