Cheryl Cole eat your heart out. Rapunzel’s blonde tresses are so enviably long, that they’ve taken actress Amy Noble weeks to get used to.
But with the curtain going up on Creation’s big Christmas show, the beautiful 25 year-old has finally got her head around it.
“It was very difficult to work with all her hair to begin with,” Amy agrees. “We had to rehearse the technical side of it for ages to get it right. But now, touch wood, I’ve mastered the technique and hope I won’t have any bad hair days during the run!” she laughs.
Because the only problem facing Amy, when she won the part of Rapunzel, was that she had a short dark bob, rather than the long fair mane required for the part.
But little fazes Amy, who won over Oxford when she played Juliet this summer so successfully in Creation’s Romeo and Juliet. “What particularly appealed to me about the part of Rapunzel is that in this script she is shown as a very unconventional fairytale heroine – she’s brave, feisty, quirky and funny – everything little girls want to be when they grow up.
“And so far we’ve performed to a good mixture of adults and children in the audience, and one of the great things about this play is that it has different elements that appeal to different ages – grown-ups tend to love my sidekick Ambrosi’s patter, song and witty dialogue, whereas the kids are mesmerised by the puppetry and the physical knock-about humour – and of course Rapunzel’s hair!”
As for The Mirror Tent location at Oxford’s Mini plant in Cowley, Amy is delighted with the venue. “I’d never been in one before but have found that The Mirror Tent is a truly magical performance space.
“I love the history of the tent – the fact that they have been used in Europe for 100 years and everyone from Marlene Dietrich to Elton John has performed in it. The mirrors and tiny lights inside create a little fairy-tale world that envelops both actors and audience.
“It’s great to be performing Rapunzel in the round.”
It sounds like Amy missed Oxford while she was away! “I loved living in Oxford over the summer while I rehearsed and performed in Romeo and Juliet. When I went back home to Brighton I really missed walking across Christchurch Fields to rehearsals every morning so it’s wonderful to be doing that again.”
