THEY look like them, sound like them and even party like them. To all intents and purposes Jonny B Jack and Nelly B Meg ARE the White Stripes.
Cunningly named The Stripe Whites, this East Oxford drum and guitar double act are as close to the Detrioit garage rock duo as it’s possible to get.
Already going down a storm with riotous gigs at the O2 Academy and Cellar, the pair return to the O2 for a show this Saturday, supporting fellow tribute act Kins of Leon.
And while a few gullible gig-goers may have been taken in, Nelly B Meg thinks it’s hillarious. “No one would seriously expect to see the real White Stripes and Kings of Leon to play an O2 Academy for £8...”
The drummer, who only learned to play last year but is already an accomplished stickswoman, decided to team up with Jonny B Jack after a bit of fun during a soundcheck at the Jericho Tavern.
The rock marriage was sealed at last year’s Truck Festival. Their first gig, supporting metal Bee Gees tribute Tragedy, saw the band’s frontman Robin Gibbens joining them on stage with a tambourine.
“The White Stripes are an amazing band with so many great songs, and it’s good to have an opportunity to sound like them,” Nelly B Meg adds.
l The Stripe Whites play the Oxford 02 Academy at 8.30pm on Saturday. Tickets are £8 from ticketweb.co.uk
