THE most surprising thing about seeing psychedelic folk-pop act Dodos live is that there are only two of them. Quite frankly, their music is so powerful it sounds like there are many more members.
The San Franciscan duo create beautifully orchestrated music, ranging from soft chanting and wistful lyrics, to escalating primal screams and frantic strumming.
How this is possible from just two instruments, is a secret known only to them. On Saturday, the Bay Area buzz band hit Oxford's Carling Academy in support of their debut album Visiter.
Adding extra depth to what would have been a typically commanding performance anyway, Meric Long and Logan Kroeber will be joined by a second sticksman Joe Haener to amplify and reinforce the focus of the West African influenced drumming in their music.
And, here's a little something to look out for: don't miss Meric's inventive 'tambourine foot' — which, as it suggests, involves him having a tambourine strapped to his toes.
If you're going, don't leave it too late. Support comes from Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and west Oxfordshire rising stars Tristan & The Toubadours.
Tickets are £7 in advance. Doors open at 7pm. The Dodos album Visiter is out on Wichita Recordings.
