GREEN fuels company Green Biologics was named Best Biotech Fundraiser at an Oxfordshire awards dinner, for raising £5m to commercialise its technology.
Based at Milton Park, near Abingdon, it uses friendly microbes to chew up agricultural wastes and convert them into fuel. Its fundraising in June 2010 was one of the largest investment rounds for industrial biotechnology companies in Europe.
Other winners at the Oxfordshire Bioscience Network's annual awards at the Museum of the History of Science and Exeter College, Oxford, included Oxford Immunotec, which was named Best MedTech Fundraiser for drawing in £18m to market its TB test; and Millipore Biopharma Services, named Best Biotech Dealmaker after buying Milton Park-based BioAnaLab.
Microbial Solutions, based at Heyford, was named Best Early-Stage Biotech for the launch of its new 30 tonne bioreactor to treat metal working fluids. Oxford University spin-out OrganOx was named Best Early-Stage Medtech for its medical device to preserve organs before transplant.
Dr Jon Rees, chief executive of OBN, said: “It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to celebrate the real business successes being delivered by our member companies and this year’s awards dinner was no exception.
"The winners highlight the ongoing strengths of the Oxford and South East bioclusters and the impact science-based companies are having across a range of healthcare and environmental areas.”
OBN is a not-for-profit business network which has expanded to cover the whole of South-East England.
