AN IRONMONGERY store which can trace its history back 140 years has re-opened in its traditional home.
Champion and Co, of Wallingford, will return to its premises in St Mary’s Street after undergoing a £100,000 refurbishment.
General manager Kevin Willis said: “It has taken three months because it is a listed building and we wanted to retain its character.
“So we have kept aspects such as the traditional wooden floor, drawers and cabinets but have added new fixtures, fittings and lighting.”
Champion and Co was opened in 1869 by Thomas Champion, who forged horseshoes as well as selling hardware. It was bought in 2005 by Richard Rowse, owner of Pettits department store. The expanded range will include more small electrical items as well as more accessories for the home.
