TWO university graduates who are aiming to increase the use of electric bicycles have expanded into Oxford.

The Electric Transport Shop in Magdalen Road is the brainchild of Eddie Kehoe and Jamie McAlley, who already have two successful shops in Cambridge and London.

The shop will be managed by Nickie Claassens, from Wolvercote, with the help of one part-timer.

Opening the shop, Liberal Democrat councillor Jean Fooks said: "Despite the Oxford Transport Strategy reducing car traffic in the centre of Oxford, air quality is still relatively poor.

"Anything which reduces traffic and helps people to travel by less polluting modes has to be good news. I welcome the arrival of The Electric Transport Shop in Oxford and hope people will try out this innovative, highly sustainable form of transport as their contribution to cleaning Oxford's air as well as a fast and convenient way to travel within the city."

Mr Kehoe said: "Our inspiration for launching The Electric Transport Shop came after we graduated in Cambridge. Both Jamie and I wanted to earn a living in the city and do something good in the place we love.

"With city traffic increasing, there's a big demand for alternative ways of travelling short distances without the use of a car. We've had great demand for electric transport from Oxford residents and are very happy to now be launching our third store in this historic city."

Five years on and The Electric Transport Shop has the best knowledge in the industry and the widest selection of electric bikes in the UK. Adding to its portfolio of success, the company is the sole supplier of ebikes to Halfords Cycle to Work Scheme, designer of the Claud Butler ebike and consultant to the Royal Mail in its purchase of 14,000 ebikes.
