Customers received a thank-you, a glass of bubbly and a slice of cake at Abingdon's Mostly Books bookshop at a party to celebrate the shop winning a national award.

Mostly Books, on Stert Street, was named New Bookshop of the Year' by the British Book industry and the award, known as a Nibbie' was on display for everyone to see.

Owner Mark Thornton said: "We were delighted so many of our customers and authors who have done events with us in the past came along to share a glass of champagne.

"It was a chance for us to say thank you for all the support we have received since we opened our doors two years ago. But it was also lovely to hear so many kind comments from people who really appreciate having an award-winning bookshop in their town."

Abingdon's newly-elected mayor, Patrick Lonergan, opened proceedings, cut the cake and made a toast. He said good, independent shops were crucial to a thriving town centre.

The award judges praised the bookshop for all-round excellence in its customer service.

Mr Thornton said: "We know we are becoming known for our events and for our fantastic coffee and lemon drizzle cake, but it's lovely to get such brilliant feedback from the book industry that they feel we've created a special shopping experience right here in Abingdon."
